STATISTICAL UPDATE: PORT VILA CENTRAL MARKET SURVEY

The Port Vila Central Market Survey summarises selected agricultural produces sold at the main wet market based on the Supply and Price of commodities. Data is collected on a fortnightly basis, analysed and published as quarterly average and by commodity groups

Summary of Findings: The Port Vila Market Survey of June quarter of 2025 showed an overall volume increase of 46 kilograms on the supply of commodities while the overall price decreased by -23 percent compared to the previous quarter.

  • Increase in the volume of all the three food groups contributed to the increase in the overall volume index compared to the previous quarter.

  • The value of commodities increased by 82 percent in the quarter under review.

  • An average of 144 sellers was recorded for this quarter.

Overview

The Port Vila Central Market survey in June quarter of 2025 showed an overall volume increase of 46 kilograms compared to the previous quarter. staple produce, Fruits, and Vegetables produce contributed to the increase in the overall volume. (refer to table 1&4).

The overall price decreased by -23 percent compared to the previous quarter. Staple produces contributed to the overall price decrease. (Refer to table 2 & 5).

Staple Food Produce

The supply of Staple food produce increased by 365 kilograms when compared to the previous quarter, while the average weighted price decreased by -19 percent.

All Commodities contributed to the increase in volume of staple food supplied to the market.

When compared to the same quarter of the previous year, staple food produce volume increased by 12 percent and its weighted average price also decreased by -9 percent. (Refer to table 1 & 2).

Fruit Produce

An overview of Fruits supplied to the Port Vila Central Market in the quarter under review showed an overall volume increase of 49 percent compared to the previous quarter, while its weighted average price increased by 23 percent. Fruits that contributed to the increase in volume were, Ripe Banana by 325 Kilograms and Pawpaw by 289 Kilograms. When compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the quantity supplied of fruits to the Port Vila Central Market decreased by -15 percent increased by 8 percent (Refer to table 1 & 2).

Vegetable Produce

The supply of Vegetables to the Port Vila Central Market in June quarter of 2025 recorded an overall volume increase of 31 Kilograms and the average price per kilograms also increased by 5 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Vegetable produces that contributed to the increase in the overall volume of vegetables supplied to the market in the quarter under review includes, cucumber by 105 kilograms, Island Cabbage by 75 kilograms, Chinese cabbage by 34 kilograms, Tomato by 26 kilograms, bowl cabbage (white) by 26 kilograms, lettuce by 8 kilograms, pumpkin by 3 kilograms and carrots by 2 kilograms. There was no purple bowl cabbage sold at the market in the quarter under review.

When compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the supply of vegetables to the market increased by 6 percent and its average weighted price increase by 35 percent. (Refer to table 1 & 2).

Seller Per Commodity Group

June quarter of 2025 recorded a total average of 144 sellers1 at the Port Vila Central Market, which is an increase of 57 vendors when compared to the previous quarter and a decrease of 7 vendors when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

When compared to the previous quarter, staple produce vendors increased by 87 percent, fruits produce vendors increased by 65 percent and vegetables produce vendors increased by 35 percent

When compared to June quarter of 2024, Vegetable and staple produce vendors increased by 38 percent and 17 percent respectively, while fruits produce vendors decreased by -41 percent. (Refer to table 6).

Value of Supplies

The average value of commodities at the Port Vila Central Market in the quarter under review recorded a value of VT819,000. This is an overall increase of 82 percent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 9 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year.(refer to table 3)

Staple produce registered the largest share in value at 67 percent. Staple produce increased in value by VT349,000 over the previous quarter and increased in value by VT116,000 over the same quarter of the previous year.

Vegetables and Fruits produces registered the same share in values at 17 percent each in quarter under review.

Vegetable produce value increased by 4 percent in the quarter under review and decreased by -11 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.

Fruits produce value increased by 11 percent when compared to the previous quarter. However, when compared to the same quarter of the previous year, fruits produce value decreased by -19 percent.

Concepts and Definitions

The Port Vila Market Survey was instigated to measure the price and volume of specific agricultural produces in the main market. The survey is conducted on a fortnightly basis.The data analysed in this report shows quarterly average supply and prices of the commodities under study. Weights are based on 2016 using HIES 2010 and Agriculture Census 2007 and were used henceforth.
